Handgun and Cocaine Seized in OPP Drug Bust on Highway 17 near Nairn-Hyman

NAIRN-HYMAN TOWNSHIP — A traffic stop by the Ontario Provincial Police has led to the seizure of a loaded handgun, cocaine, and opioids, and the arrest of a 30-year-old man from St. Catharines.

On the evening of Thursday, June 26, 2025, at around 9:45 p.m., members of the OPP’s Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with support from the Manitoulin detachment, conducted a targeted stop on Highway 17 in Nairn-Hyman Township, west of Sudbury.

During the stop, officers arrested one individual and seized approximately 253 grams of suspected cocaine and 38 suspected Percocet tablets. Police also recovered a Glock 19X handgun with an over-capacity magazine, along with drug paraphernalia. The estimated street value of the drugs is $25,500.

The suspect, identified as Hanad Ahmed, 30, faces a series of firearms and drug trafficking charges, including:
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order (two counts)
Breach of Firearms Regulations – transport firearm or restricted weapon
Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
Possession of an opioid (other than heroin) for the purpose of trafficking

Ahmed remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
