Greater Sudbury Transit Fleet Equipped with Video Camera Surveillance

Greater Sudbury Transit has completed installation of a mobile video surveillance system on board its entire fleet of 60 buses. Each bus has been equipped with a digital video recorder and five interior cameras that monitor passenger seating, front and back bus doors and surrounding traffic.

“Digital video recording systems deter criminal activities by assisting police in identification,” said Greater Sudbury Manager of Transit Operations Robert Gauthier. “This is an important step to reduce the risk of assault on bus operators and to restore passenger confidence in the overall safety of the local public transit system.”

Greater Sudbury Council approved the purchase of mobile video surveillance systems for local public transit in October, 2013. A Greater Sudbury Transit Safety Task Force, created at the request of Mayor Marianne Matichuk following incidents of assault or threats against Transit operators, continues to move forward with enhanced safety measures for the fleet and downtown terminal.
