MVC Involving Police Cruiser and School Bus

At approximately 06:45 pm on Tuesday December 16th, a fully marked Greater Sudbury Police cruiser stopped on Kinsgway Blvd to assist a disabled out of service school bus that was not carrying any passengers. The bus was being driven to a garage by a mechanic. It had broken down. After a short time the school bus became mobile.

The officer followed the school bus westbound on the Kinsgway a short distance. The bus stopped suddenly near Cochrane St on Kingsway Blvd in the curbside lane without any brake lighting. The officer braked, but the front end of the cruiser went under the rear end of the bus causing extensive front end damage.

The officer was taken to Health Sciences North with very minor injuries and released. He returned to duty upon release from HSN.

The driver of the bus was not injured.

The Traffic Management Unit was called in to investigate this motor vehicle collision. Both vehicles were towed by police. There will be a mechanical examination of the vehicles as a part of the investigation which is ongoing at this time.

If it had been anyone other than a police officer there would have been careless or following to close charges guaranteed, brake lights or not its a bus and you would have to be blind or like mentioned texting to not see a big yellow school bus stop period. I had a very similar incident and it was proven that the vehicle I rear ended had not taillights or brake lights and I was charged with careless driving..cop or not what applies to ccivilian's should apply to the cops on both the careless and what he was doing(distracted driving) charges. However our awesome GSPS are more corrupt than most criminals.
