Sudbury Lunch Lady Recycles 11,464 Lunch Kits to Raise Money For Sickkids Hospital in Memory of her Son

This Fall Schneiders Lunchmate will Triple her Points

(Sudbury, ON - October 15, 2015) Diane Davis, a lunch lady at Ecole Jean Paul II in Val Caron, lost her son Joel to a heart and lung condition four years ago - ever since, she has been honouring his memory by fundraising for the organizations that helped him (SickKids Foundation, Starlight Children's Foundation). But she doesn't call around asking for donations; instead, she asks for people's trash.

Davis collects various forms of packaging waste for TerraCycle Canada, an independent recycling agency specializing in diverting from landfill what municipalities deem "non-‐recyclable" - items such as lunch kits, cookie wrappers and drink pouches. She first discovered TerraCycle when her son began collecting his classmates' Lunchmate packaging in order to claim Lunchmate Bucks, which he would donate to the Children's Miracle Network. When Joel passed away, Diane logged into his account and noticed TerraCycle's logo - she learned how this recycling program could help fundraise for even more charities, and began collecting used lunch kits at the local school with such dedication that she is now the top collector of lunch kit packages in the country, having diverted 10,694 of them from our nation's landfills.

Usually, for each item Davis sends to TerraCycle, she earns two TerraCycle points (equal to two cents) - these points get saved in her account until she's ready to make a donation. However, after learning about Diane's story, Schneiders Lunchmate is now promising to triple all of the points she earns from her lunch kit shipments from today right through until the end of 2015.

"We are honoured to help Diane and contribute to her wonderful cause," said Chantal Butler, Vice President, Marketing & Masterbrands for Maple Leaf Foods, which owns Schneiders Lunchmate. "We are really excited to be part of this effort and to see it unfold throughout Sudbury and the surrounding communities. By doing our part, we can help reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill while donating to important charities."

This means it's all the more crucial for Sudbury residents to help Davis collect used lunch kits for recycling. "This will help the planet, help charities, and it doesn't cost a thing," says Davis.

Northern Internet Solution

It's easy to contribute to her recycling and fundraising efforts - simply start collecting all of your used lunch kit packaging (any brand); between now and December 31, 2015, drop them off at Ecole Jean Paul II from Monday to Friday, anytime (a bin will be located either outside or just inside the front doors). For those outside of Sudbury who want to help, sign up for a TerraCycle account, join the Schneider's Lunchmate Brigade and list SickKids Foundation as your charity of choice.
