The Homelessness Network of Sudbury has issued an ‘Extreme Cold Weather Alert’ in Greater Sudbury for the next 24 hours.

 

Those on the street are encouraged to seek warmth at one of the local shelters or access one of the other municipal homelessness services. Those who may be at risk due to low temperatures in the homes are also eligible to access these services.

 

The Extreme Cold Weather Alert program is an initiative funded by the City of Greater Sudbury to protect those most vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

 

The following services are available under a community partnership agreement:

 

Hotline: 705-675-6422 - L’Association des jeunes de la rue will operate an overnight information line to direct caller to appropriate service and field calls from citizens concerned about those that may be vulnerable.

 

Shelters: l’Association des jeunes de le rue for youth, , Cedar Place for women and children and Salvation Army men’s shelter will be available 24 hrs.

 

Emergency Warming Centre: The Elgin Street Mission will extend it’s hours and remain open 24 hrs during an ‘Extreme Cold Alert’ to operate as a warming centre. It will also provide a hot meal at night.

 

 

Outreach: Community outreach will provide overnight services in an effort to make contact with people on the street and transport them to shelters. Workers will also have extra clothing, blankets and coffee on hand for those who refuse services.

 

Out of the cold Shelter: Offers those under the influence or those otherwise disconnected from mainstream shelter services with a temporary cot and a warm, safe place to sleep. The program runs from 8pm until 7am nightly until April 15.
