Suspicious Package Located at Byng Tot Lot #Sudbury

On Monday, July 31, 2017 at 9:15 p.m. the Greater Sudbury Police Service received a call from a concerned community member regarding what appeared to be a suspicious package located in the playground sandpit of the Byng Tot Lot near Lorne Street at Byng Street in Greater Sudbury. The woman advised the Communications Centre that she had found a small cylindrical object that was duct taped, had wires coming out of it and was partially buried at the end of the sandbox.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) Explosives Disposal Units (E.D.U.) attended the scene and the package was removed without incident.

An initial examination of the package revealed that the device appears to be a small home-made firework. There is no danger to the Public. Uniform Officers will be canvassing the neighbourhood for information and potential video surveillance footage of the area or any suspicious activity/people.

Residents and business owners in the area are asked to check their property for any discarded items that may have been used to construct the device (piping, wire, mesh wire and duct tape) and similar devices. If these items or a similar device are found on your property, please do not touch them and contact Police.

This incident is being investigated by the Greater Sudbury Police Service Criminal Investigations Division.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police at 675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS, online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).
