The Ministry of Natural Resources - Sudbury District is advising area residents in Sudbury, Markstay-Warren, Wanup, St. Charles, Espanola, areas of the North-shore and the unorganized Townships south of Sudbury that a Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook remains in effect within these areas. The key watersheds included in this statement are; the Aux Sables River, Spanish River, Wanapitei River, Veuve River and Vermillion River.
Residents in these areas should keep a close watch on conditions, regularly check for updated messages and stay away from fast-moving rivers and streams.
MNR is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Description of Weather System
The weather forecast in the Sudbury District is calling for moderate precipitation on Thursday, up to 35mm, and then very light precipitation from Friday through to Sunday. The precipitation should move out of our area by Monday. Temperatures are expected to be below seasonal norms, with a high of 13 degrees on Thursday, then dropping to 10 degrees Friday and remaining that way for much of the long-weekend. While cool, the temperatures should remain above freezing.
Description of Current Conditions
While the snow has now disappeared from the area, there is still some ice remaining on many of the lakes at the north-end of the District. The flows and water levels have increased slightly along a few areas of the river and will continue to do so with Thursday’s precipitation. With the potential for fast-moving water we are still advising residents, especially children, to use caution around local rivers and streams.
