Off-Duty Police Officer Charged Following Incident at Local Arena

(ESPANOLA, ON) - On February 11, 2024, an incident occurred at an arena in the Town of Espanola, Ontario, following a hockey game. According to reports, a 12-year-old player from an opposing team was threatened and assaulted by a coach. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated the matter, leading to the arrest of Melisa Rancourt, a 50-year-old resident of Espanola.

Rancourt, identified as a coach at the arena, was charged with assault, uttering threats causing death or bodily harm, and causing a disturbance. No injuries were reported from the incident.

In a noteworthy development, it was revealed that Rancourt is also a constable with the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) since 2018. Following her arrest, Chief Paul Pedersen announced an internal investigation into the alleged misconduct of Constable Rancourt. In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Rancourt was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

"While these allegations have yet to be proven in a court of law, the actions of one individual do not represent our members or reflect the values of our organization," stated Chief Pedersen. "It is always concerning to hear of an officer involved in such incidents. This is not a reflection of our members who serve this community with pride and professionalism. We have confidence in our judicial system and the accountability processes outlined in the Police Services Act.

"The Greater Sudbury Police Service's Professional Standards Bureau will conduct the internal investigation, while the OPP continues its criminal inquiry into the incident. Both investigations aim to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of law enforcement agencies.

Rancourt is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on March 4, 2024, where further legal proceedings will take place regarding the incident at the local arena.
