Update

February 6, 2014 10:25 am - The Health Unit has issued the following advisory:

The Sudbury & District Health Unit is issuing a drinking water advisory effective immediately for all residents of Wahnapitae and areas east of the town who draw their water from the Wanapitei Water Treatment Plant.

A drinking water advisory means that people who take their water from the municipal system should NOT be using it for drinking, making juice, infant formula, or ice; cooking; washing uncooked fruits and vegetables; or brushing teeth. Boiling the water may not make it safe for drinking. For these purposes, water from an alternate source, such as bottled water, should be used. The water may be used for laundry and bathing (excluding small children).

The City of Greater Sudbury advises that drinking water may be obtained by filling personal containers at the nearest water filling stations located on Bancroft Drive in Sudbury near Moonlight Beach Road, Spruce Street in Garson and Countryside Drive in Sudbury near the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

The City of Greater Sudbury is working to re-establish the water supply, which was interrupted due to a pipeline failure. Once the water supply is re-established, residents should not use the water for human consumption until advised otherwise by the Health Unit.

The repair to the pipeline could create conditions that compromise the safety of the drinking water. “Once the work is completed, the system will be super-chlorinated and flushed,” said Burgess Hawkins, a manager in the Health Unit’s Environmental Health Division. “Until bacteriological testing of the drinking water indicates a safe supply, the drinking water advisory will remain in effect.”

Health Unit staff will continue to monitor the situation. The Sudbury & District Health Unit will notify the municipality when the drinking water advisory is lifted and residents will be advised.
