Editorial - Petition for Missing Persons Legislation Introduced to Legislative Assembly of Ontario

On October 20th, Catherine Fife introduced the first petition calling for the government of Ontario to introduce Missing Persons legislation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad5iDPofaj0

Currently Ontario does not have missing persons legislation which means that police are often unable to conduct thorough investigations upon receipt of a missing person report where criminal activity is not considered the cause. Currently police can not use things such as cell phone records and credit card/bank account statements or access email and social media account to track the activity of missing persons.

The current petition asks that the Attorney General’s Office work with the office of the Privacy Commissioner to implement Missing Person’s Legislation that grants investigators the opportunity to apply for permissions to access information that will assist in determining the safety or whereabouts of missing persons for whom criminal activity is not considered the cause.

This is a matter that hits close to home with the family of missing 16 year old Meagan Pilon from Greater Sudbury and many other families across the province struggle to find answers about missing loved ones. Meagan's family is circulating this petition and collecting signatures to mail to Queens Park. You can also print out a copies of this petition, get signatures and mail to the QUEENS PARK address listed at the bottom of the petition or sighed petitions can be dropped of at local MPP's offices and they will deliver to Cathetine Fife's office in Toronto.

Thanks for your editorial regarding "Ontario needs Missing Persons legislation. My husband and I were present when Catherine Fife introduced the petition on Mon. Oct. 20, 2014. Ontario is long overdue on this legislation to allow police access to information and to locations that will help in finding our missing loved ones. Continue to get signatures in support of this necessary legislation to help find our missing loved ones.

Thanks for your support,

Maureen and Don Trask, Waterloo, ON, Canada

Our son, Daniel Trask is missing, since Nov.3, 2011
