Miners for Cancer donates $100,000 to Northern Cancer Foundation Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund

Sudbury, February 1, 2016 – Members of Miners for Cancer announced on Friday a $100,000 donation towards the Northern Cancer Foundation Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund.

The donation will be going towards the Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund Committee’s goal of raising enough capital to purchase the positron emission tomography scanner – an imaging machine used to diagnose, and stage treatment for cancer as well as cardiac disease and neurological disorders.

“The Sam Bruno P.E.T. Steering Committee is thrilled that Miners for Cancer has come forward with their support in the acquisition of this gold standard imaging device for the citizens of Sudbury and the northeast,” said Brenda Tessaro, Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund Committee Member. “We appreciate the enormity of the work that is involved in their fundraising efforts and are grateful to them for assisting us in significantly improving our local healthcare system."

In December, the Ontario Government announced it would provide $1.6 million in annual operational funding for a P.E.T. scanner if the hospital and community raise the $4 million required to purchase the scanner.

All funds raised by Miners for Cancer stays in Northern Ontario. Helping to bring a P.E.T. scanner to the Northeast Cancer Centre will mean members of our community won’t have to travel for this service anymore,” said Wayne Tonelli, President, Miners for Cancer. “It’s important to keep those affected by cancer closer to their families.”
